Jewel Moats Lancaster genealogical collection

John Erskine Civil War Letter
This single letter was written in Atlanta by Erskine to Franklin P. Brown, the young son of Governor Joseph E. Brown in Milledgeville, Georgia. He sent books to the boy and described his favorite childhood stories. He also commented that "Gen. Finegan has given the Yankees a good drubbing in East Florida."
John F. Martin slave bill of sale
A slave bill of sale - "Received of John F. Martin fifteen hundred dollars in full for my four negroes to wit Brister and his wife Sylvia and their two grand children Albert and Sylvia the boy Albert about eight years and the other six years in September next, . . ." signed by Martha Bulloch, February 1854.

John H. and Caroline C. McTyre family letters
Primarily Civil War letters from John H. McTyre (sometimes McTier), 41st Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company C, who in one letter wrote from the ditches west of Atlanta. He wrote to his wife Caroline about the death of her brother, James Cox, of his fears that he may never see his family again, and makes references to their sons, Randy and Jimmy. Also included is a letter from Caroline Cox to John H. McTier in Alabama before their marriage.

The letter is written from Tampicoe, Mexico, before the battle of that name, to Miss Mary Ann Cooper in Forsyth, Georgia.
John H. J. Knowles letters
Letters to Knole's wife, Margaret, from Camp Smith, Savannah, Georgia, and from Virginia. He served in Company K of the 26th Regiment Georgia Volunteers and died in July 1862 of parotitis or mumps.
John H. Reece Civil War papers
Journal (1864 - 1865) kept at Johnson's Island, Ohio, Civil War Prison by the captain of 1st Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company G. Reece described the weather, war news, and some prison conditions. Also included are: a law notebook kept in Athens, Georgia, 1859; a request for release from camp hospital, 1864; and a photograph of him in late life, ca. 1900.
John Hartwell Woodward correspondence
Four letters by Woodward when he served as Representative from Dooly County, Georgia, in the Georgia House (1871-1872), to his wife, Nancy Barnelia McCormick (1841-1895). Also included are a courtship letter from Carrie Sheats (1840-1863), his first wife, in 1861, and a letter from Joseph Pancoast, Philadelphia physician, who gave his opinion of the 1872 Presidential candidates.

The collection contains five items: an 1814 estate paper of Prudence Campbell, administrator of the estate of Stephenson Campbell, being a note held against Robert Mays; an 1819 letter from John H. Campbell in Augusta to his mother concerning the necessity of schooling for his brothers; an 1884 reprint of a published letter by John A. Campbell, judge and former Assistant Secretary of War, CSA; an 1894 Hawkinsville, GA, ball invitation; and a 1903 Brenau College program.

John Lowry Harris Collection
John Marshall Slaton collection, 1860-1955 (bulk 1880-1914).
Records of Slaton as a lawyer, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, and governor. Also included are Slaton and Grant family material and news clippings collected nationally on the Leo Frank case and Slaton's response to it some in scrapbooks. About half the collection are the personal and official records of Samuel Carter Atkinson, Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court (1906-1931).

John Wilson Civil War letter
Letter by Union soldier in the 102nd Regiment New York Volunteers, Company K, while stationed in Atlanta, Georgia, in October 1864 after its capture by General Sherman, written to a Chester Blackwell of Saugerties, Ulster County, New York, about the war and politics. Wilson was probably a bank clerk, which possibly explains the clear handwriting of the letter.
