The collection contains research on the Moats, Darling, Ricketts, Hull, Lancaster, and Herren families; Jasper County, Georgia, records; E. Jewel M. Lancaster papers; Mary Magdalene Hogan (Mrs. William E.) Moats estate settlement papers; and letter typescripts. Many of the papers are photocopies.

Milner, Pike County (now Lamar County), Georgia, account book kept by Martin for J. F. M. English, listing his accounts and notes owed him. Martin may have functioned as accountant or banker. 50 pages numbered by archivist. Other pages missing.

Most of the letters are from James H. Burton with a smaller portion from Oneita Langford, asking for assistance. There are also records regarding a personal loan.

Letter to Rushin's wife, Elizabeth, from Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia, where he was serving in the Georgia House of Representatives, about the Civil War and family agricultural business.

Letters written to Miss Lizzie, Pierce's future wife, while he was serving in the 3rd Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company F, known as the Wilkinson Rifles.

The letters were written by this Morgan County, Georgia, teacher and administrator to a former pupil, Annie Gay (later Pennington), with whom he was in love. Many of the letters are not complete. Newspaper clippings about Saye's death are also included.

This collection is mostly newspaper clippings documenting the work lives of brother and sister, John and Mary White, who grew up in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia.

Civil War letters

Record of blacksmith services of Castleberry of Knoxville, Crawford County, Georgia. Cites date, description of blacksmith services, and cost.

This is a signed statement by two dozen Burke Co., GA, citizens as to the good character of Jno. Connell, whom they had known for 30 years.

Record of general merchandise sold, citing date, name of account, goods sold, and cost, probably in Morgan County, Georgia.

The collection contains a transcription John made of Malachi Mercer's medical book (nine pages); an 1821 slave bill of sale for Janie, about 13, purchased by Solomon Mercer, John's wife's grandfather; and a one-page biographical sketch of John Dekle.

This single letter was written in Atlanta by Erskine to Franklin P. Brown, the young son of Governor Joseph E. Brown in Milledgeville, Georgia. He sent books to the boy and described his favorite childhood stories. He also commented that "Gen. Finegan has given the Yankees a good drubbing in East Florida."

A slave bill of sale - "Received of John F. Martin fifteen hundred dollars in full for my four negroes to wit Brister and his wife Sylvia and their two grand children Albert and Sylvia the boy Albert about eight years and the other six years in September next, . . ." signed by Martha Bulloch, February 1854.

Primarily Civil War letters from John H. McTyre (sometimes McTier), 41st Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company C, who in one letter wrote from the ditches west of Atlanta. He wrote to his wife Caroline about the death of her brother, James Cox, of his fears that he may never see his family again, and makes references to their sons, Randy and Jimmy. Also included is a letter from Caroline Cox to John H. McTier in Alabama before their marriage.

The letter is written from Tampicoe, Mexico, before the battle of that name, to Miss Mary Ann Cooper in Forsyth, Georgia.

Letters to Knole's wife, Margaret, from Camp Smith, Savannah, Georgia, and from Virginia. He served in Company K of the 26th Regiment Georgia Volunteers and died in July 1862 of parotitis or mumps.

Journal (1864 - 1865) kept at Johnson's Island, Ohio, Civil War Prison by the captain of 1st Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company G. Reece described the weather, war news, and some prison conditions. Also included are: a law notebook kept in Athens, Georgia, 1859; a request for release from camp hospital, 1864; and a photograph of him in late life, ca. 1900.

Four letters by Woodward when he served as Representative from Dooly County, Georgia, in the Georgia House (1871-1872), to his wife, Nancy Barnelia McCormick (1841-1895). Also included are a courtship letter from Carrie Sheats (1840-1863), his first wife, in 1861, and a letter from Joseph Pancoast, Philadelphia physician, who gave his opinion of the 1872 Presidential candidates.

The collection contains five items: an 1814 estate paper of Prudence Campbell, administrator of the estate of Stephenson Campbell, being a note held against Robert Mays; an 1819 letter from John H. Campbell in Augusta to his mother concerning the necessity of schooling for his brothers; an 1884 reprint of a published letter by John A. Campbell, judge and former Assistant Secretary of War, CSA; an 1894 Hawkinsville, GA, ball invitation; and a 1903 Brenau College program.

Laminated sewn letter and typescript of an American Revolutionary War veteran's opinions and philosophy concerning the Revolution and subsequent governments, written to his son.

Records of Slaton as a lawyer, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, and governor. Also included are Slaton and Grant family material and news clippings collected nationally on the Leo Frank case and Slaton's response to it some in scrapbooks. About half the collection are the personal and official records of Samuel Carter Atkinson, Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court (1906-1931).

This collection includes business records of both Henson and his businesses, the Southern Music Plate Company and the J. M. Henson Music Company in Atlanta, GA.

A record of real estate transactions in Georgia lands, especially those distributed in the 1818, 1827, and 1832 Georgia land lotteries. Counties covered are: Bartow, Carroll, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Cobb, Coweta, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gwinnett, Habersham, Irwin, Lee, Lumpkin, Murray, Muscogee, Paulding, Rabun, Randolph, Stewart, Troup, and Union.

Record of accounts and services of a shoemaker. The ledger covers 1854 and the daybook, 1855.

The collection contains Pennington's personal business records and letters; drafts and published news stories; research materials; and photographs. Many of the latter were taken for Pennington's AJC series on Georgia prisons.

Includes an inventory of goods sold to Sandifor by Richard W. Love and another of goods sold to Sebastian C. Fox by Sandifor. Also, lists of wholesale merchandise purchases and of beef and lamb sales. Daybook type entries without dates. Pages are not numbered.

Letter from Green to his wife about camp life and the countryside outside of Jacksonville, Florida in April.

Record book kept by Lester while in attendance at Mt. Zion High School in Hancock Conty, Georgia. Contains names of instructors and an alphabetical listing of his fellow students, citing names of their hometowns from all over Georgia and parts of Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida. Includes a small amount of Lester family history and some poetry.

Transfer of slaves, Peter, 20, and Hannah, 17, to John's son, Clark Willcox, in Telfair County, Georgia.

Letter by Union soldier in the 102nd Regiment New York Volunteers, Company K, while stationed in Atlanta, Georgia, in October 1864 after its capture by General Sherman, written to a Chester Blackwell of Saugerties, Ulster County, New York, about the war and politics. Wilson was probably a bank clerk, which possibly explains the clear handwriting of the letter.
